  • 2037 AFC West Season Preview

    AFC West

Last season the AFC west was a very completive division. It had a strong race to the finish line with Denver just edging out Kansas City and Oakland. It seems this season the race will be who finishes 2nd behind Denver.

Denver – Denver does not look like a team that should win this division with out a race. They just seem to have more pieces to work with.

Offense - Any good team needs to have good QB play. Denver has it with Ryan Tannehill. The problem is there is not a a lot of talent around him. TE Leon Sims is a player with a lot of talent. They need to find more ways to get him involved in the offense. CJ Clauss is a solid WR, but nothing that will put fear in defenses. Rookie 1st rounder Irvin Carlson could be that WR they have been needed to separate themselves from the rest of the AFC West. The offensive line will have its struggles this season. Center Sherman Angus is as good as it gets. After him there is not much there. There is hope that rookie LT Randal Randle turns out to be a good one.

Defense - The defensive line as a whole is a nice looking unit. DE’s Washington and Schlidt should drive opposing QB’s crazy. Washington has 19 sacks over the last 2 seasons. DT Harry Roberson has ability to get to the QB as well. The LB’s on this team is as good as anyone in the league. Broderick Cella and Paul Lawless are top notch. With how good the D-line and LB ‘s are the strongest part of this defense is the secondary. CB’s Bobby Cooper and Donnie Shell are still very young and have not reached their full potential, but 6 int’s between them is not a bad start. SS Bo Fiester is another young buck in this very good secondary. Entering his 3rd season he already has 8 interceptions.

Outlook – This team is built for the long haul. The defense is built to shut teams down. For this team to be successful it is quite simple, the offenses job is to not screw things up.

San Diego – This is a team that should hang with Denver early on but fade late. With a 16 year vet as its starter the team was trying to move its only other serviceable QB in the off-season. . The direction of this team is still uncertain.

Offense – Jimmy Clausen is still a QB that can get the job done. Although RB Rick Carr’s production has declined each of the last 3 seasons he will continue to take the pressure off Clausen. Because of the absence of a true number 1 WR, San Diego does not have time for TE Tyler Eifert to grow in his own. He needs to step up and be the playmaker this team knows he can be. 22 receptions a year ago is not going to get it done this season. Center Kelvin Lane and OT Lane Johnson lead a pretty solid group. They should do enough to allow Clausen and Carr to get the job done.

Defense – The Defensive line has a couple of nice players on it in Antonio Caudill and Michael Brockers. 1st rd pick OLB Walter Johnston will help this defense from day 1. The heart and soul of this team is all-league, all-world MLB Jerry Allen. He is among if not the best LB in the game. Only if he could play secondary. This team needs the help. CB Donnie Nord is a pretty good player and the teams best. SS Jared Craig has shown some flashes but nothing too consistent.

Outlook – This team could really push Denver, but the question is what is the intentions of the Administration? Does Jimmy Clausen have a short leash? Are they looking to move players to build for the future? If this team stays together and Clausen can stay healthy they will be a tough team to beat.

Oakland – This team was in the cellar last season. I think it is time they make there move and give Denver something to think about.

Offense – Normally if a QB throws for less then 55% and more int for TD it means a change in QB. For Oakland it means he won the starting QB Job. It is not like they had a ton of options. Griffin did not win the job either. The biggest thing they need is to find a QB that can win the job for his positive play, not because he made the less mistakes. How do you fix a QB problem? Draft a stud RB with the 3rd pick of the draft. That is exactly what Oakland did. Glenn Gregoire (G2) should help change the face of this franchise. Adding G2 along with stand out WR Lamar Miller and a couple of nice looking TE’s in Erikson and Rivera they have the weapons to compete in the west. The offensive line with the help of OG Fernando King and RT Erik Fisher should open up holes for G2.

Defense – This will be a tough spot all year. To be a good defense you need to get after the QB. The top 3 DE’s Malik Jackson (3.5 sacks in last 43 games, 0 last year), Austin Rouse (1 sack), and Daniel Wilkerson (3 sacks) have a total of 4 sacks last season. They used a 2nd rd pick on a pass rushing DT in Luke Viscontil who broke the Siena sack record last season. The LB’s are a nice unit who is getting older. Thurman Palper is entering his 9th season, but can still bring the noise. The secondary might not be a dangerous unit, but everone wants to know where SS Rico Fisk is lining up. He is a big time playmaker who loves the spotlight.

Outlook - This team has some nice young pieces on the offensive side of the ball. It is just a matter of time when they start clicking together. If G2 plays well they could push Denver to the brink.

Kansas City – Last season they finished the season losing 2 of their last three games, which held them out of the playoffs. This year they could be taking a competitive year off to groom the future.

Offense – Last seasons 1st rd pick Ken “The Snake” Stabler could be getting the nod to run this team. If that is the case this team will take a seat back. But this does help with the long term future of the franchise. Trent Richardson is not getting younger, but played at a high level last season. They will need WR help. Dustin Kennedy is the best of a bad group. TE Luther Dobson they brought in this off-season to give the Snake another weapon. The offensive line is not great, but they have some solid players. There is talk that Claude Cobb could play OG, which would really help the line as a unit.

Defensive – This is a nice looking group as a whole. DE Ernie McIntyre has the tools to be the best in the league. He has yet to play up to expectations. This needs to be his coming out party. I can see him getting between 11-13 sacks this season. DT’s Jonathon Beyer and Corey Kiuget will be tough to contain. MLB Charles Messantonio keeps getting better. The secondary is a unit that can hang with almost anyone. CB Trumaine Johnson can hold his own with the top WR’s in this league. Safeties Quinn Blaylock and RJ McGrath play well when they are on the field together.

Outlook – By far the strength of this team is the defense. With a new starting QB at the helm it could mean quick drives and turnovers. That would cause the defense to be on the field much longer. That being said you might not see the full value of this defense until the offense gets themselves going in the right direction.

    Nice job man!

San Diego are in rebuilding mode at this point, it will be two or three years before be really competitive again!! Maybe we don´t see in this versión that, but for sure I will try to do a good season anyway!

thank you! enjoyed reading that. all of this year's previews are top-notched and it's apparent that the writers all spent good efforts.

Nice write-up. My QB situation is a mess because Roberts stunk up the joint (for years) and I couldn't take it anymore. I was hoping to get a QB in the draft, but that didn't happen so I'll suffer through with what I've got. On the plus side, he keeps sliding upwards. Maybe he'll be better than his ratings currently suggest. I'm hoping he's a creeper and not a creep.
