Marklund retires, Falcons revamp coaching staff
eagles.jpg
Atlanta will head into the offseason with an almost entirely new coaching staff
After a disappointing playoff run, with a first round shutout loss to the Giants, Falcon's head coach Graham Marklund announced his retirement. Marklund was well liked as a coach turning around a failing Falcons franchise. He was known for his old school straight up 3-4 defense, and his ability to motivate players. Marklund was a head coach for 29 years for various teams but was never able to win a Super Bowl. He retired with an 185-268 record. We wish him the best in his retirement.
After Marklund's retirement, the Falcon's offensive coordinator, defensive coordinator, and strength coach all saw their contracts run out. As a result, the Falcons had to renovate their coaching staff in the staff draft. Here are who the Falcons picked up:
Head Coach: Reggie Hoppe, former Eagles Head Coach, 10-37-1 over his career
Offensive Coorindator: Eli Wooden
Defensive Coorindator: Hardy Clements, former Eagles Defensive Coordinator, 7-24-1 over his career
Strength Coach: Gabriel Melchior, First-year NFL strength coach
All newly hired coaches are NFL rookies, with the exception of Clements and Hoppe who were both with the Eagles. The lone face that remains from the 2051 coaching staff is Assitant Coach, Brady Francis. It looks like the Falcon's front office was looking for continuity with this staff. Specifically, in fixing the defensive woes the Falcons experienced last year. Hoppe, Francis, and Clements all previously ran 4-3 under defenses. This likely signals a change in the Falcon's defensive scheme.
On the offensive side of the ball, Eli Wooden comes from a high powered Alabama spread offense that was consistently one of the best in the nation. Wooden was known at Alabama for his ability to develop young QBs into polished products that fit perfectly into his spread offense.
Overall, these are some good pickups for the Falcons, and it'll be exciting to see where they go from here
