After finishing the previous season with a disappointing record of 8-8, the ownership of the Texans had a serious front office staffing issue to consider. The former General Manager used the franchise tag on an aging, underperforming quarterback, and he was quickly let go. In an unprecedented move, a member of the janitorial staff was promoted to run the team for the upcoming season.
During free agency the organization let a few key players walk as they focused on rebuilding through the draft. The success of this seasons draft remains uncertain, the team was missing picks from the second and third round due to some undocumented back room deal. Focusing on immediate needs, the Texans selected an offensive lineman in the first round, he is expected to start this season barring any setbacks during training camp and the preseason.
During the later rounds the Texans focused on shoring up their porous defensive front, selecting two lineman in the fourth and fifth rounds. Both appear to need significant development and will more than likely be backups this season.
After a long contractual holdout from a highly rated FA punter, the organization decided to draft a punter in the sixth round. His leg strength is questionable, but he is an ace with directional punting. The team is hoping that what he lacks in distance will be made up in fewer opponent return yards. Probably the best case scenario.
And finally in the last round a QB was selected, the team was very impressed with his combine and hoped he might be the next Tom Brady. However, there are some serious concerns about his accuracy. Preseason should be a good indicator of whether he is the next Tom Brady, or the next Christian Ponder.
