Denver Broncos
2033 Division Winner Denver (11-5) expects to build on last year’s results with an eye toward going deep in the playoffs. The team’s league leading rushing attack is led by RB David Wilson, while play action passing opens up the offense for fourth year veteran QB Ryan Tannehill who threw for career highs in yardage (3518) and touchdowns (21).
The stout LB trio of Lawless, Cella and Dotson finish plays at the point of attack, while holding opponents to under 100 yards rushing per game in 2033. The pass defense gave up 235 yards per game but limited opponents to a stellar 55.5% completion rate.
Expect Denver to successfully defend its division crown against AFC foes.
Kansas City Chiefs
Kansas City finished a lowly 3-13 last year after winning the AFC West just recently in 2032. However, they did pick up stud rookie DE Ernie “Old Painful” McIntyre. Expect McIntyre to put some much needed teeth in the Chiefs pass rush. His presence alone will free up RE James McGann from double teams. Expect both players to have double-digit sack totals if they can remain healthy.
Kansas City’s anemic offense (13.3 ppg) has to improve for the team to extricate themselves from the morass of offensive mediocrity. The quarterback merry-go-round last year saw all three quarterbacks start for KC. Fourteen veteran QB Wade Burroughs is reported to be unhappy with the lack of playmakers at the wide receiver position and does not believe this area was adequately addressed in the offseason. While up and coming RGIII is focused on the task at hand and looks to wrestle the starting position from the elder statesman.
Kansas City should improve by two wins, but will be drafting in the Top Ten again next season.
Oakland Raiders
The Silver and Black haven’t won the AFC West title since 2016. Their 5-11 record in 2033 is a continuation of long standing underachievement. The pieces are in place, but when will they put it all together as a cohesive unit? QB Kurt Roberts is an above average signal caller and RB Derek Magee can be an effective runner, if he could just get out of the training room. Speedy Wideout Lamar Miller leads the Raiduh receiving corp. The O line is decent if not unspectacular.
The defense has solid starters at OLB (Palmer and Irvin), but the defense surrendered a league leading 4.63 yards per attempt on the ground while opposing quarterbacks padded their QB rating (90.7) whenever they decided to pass. Enter newcomer CB Demarcus Van Dyke in a trade with Buffalo. Team him with Harold Aspell and the pass defense should improve considerably.
The Raiders did a nice job in the rookie draft, getting Miller and filling special teams holes with starting a punter and kicker.
So when does the Silver and Black attack begin to live up to their celebrated history? 2034 appears to be another year of grinding gears on the Pacific Coast Highway. Exit stage right for another 5-11 season.
San Diego Chargers
The pastel blue Lightning Bolts don their Superman costume in 2034 after an unfulfilling 7-9 record in 2033. The C-men last won the AFC West in 2029 and are on the come again.
Led by QB Jimmy Clausen, second year RB Rick Carr and bulldog center Kelvin Lane anchoring the offensive line, the Bolts seek more run/pass balance than last year. The Chargers secondary held opponents to under 200 yards pass per game last year. San Diego plugged a big hole up the middle with rookie MLB Jerry Allen and DTs Brockers and Ferguson should force teams to the outside, where Allen’s sideline to sideline pursuit ability should yield big tackle dividends.
The Bolts aren’t that far off from Denver, and the Broncos may just be resting on their laurels, having been dulled by winning three out of the last four division titles. San Diego improves by two wins, but falls short again.
