    2013 Preview

    2012: 6-10, 3rd

After starting off the season at 3-1, the Redskins went on to win 2 out of their next 5 games to be 5-4 entering their bye week. They finished the season a disappionting 6-10 after loosing 6 of their last 7 games.

Last seasons top draft pick RG Bryce Rydze started all 16 games and played very well, only allowing 4 sacks.

This season, Washington continued their commitment to rebuilding their offensive line taking Center Marshall Sutton with pick 1.7 and Left Tackle Howie Malio at 1.8. Sutton will be an anchor for the line for years to come, but their have been some grumblings about Malio's endurance and if he will be able to be on the field enough to merit his high pick.

In the 3rd round Washington picked up Cornerback Rich Silverstone out of Georgia Tech. After being a shutdown corner with blazing speed, some questioned his ability to play in the more zone based eNFL schemes, and at the combine, this became a valid concern, and his draft value dropped.

    Trades

    Tennessee sends RCB Sammie Legband
    Washington sends 2014 6th (from Pittsburgh) and 2014 7th (Washington's)

Some people might question the intelligence of sending 2 draft picks for a 7th round pick out of Kent State. But the little know Legband was is a force in the club house, which is needed by this rebuilding team. He's also one of the most intelligent players on the team, if not the league. And after 2 years of what seemed to be a career back up before going into coaching, the 6'2" Legband got his chance to start in his 3rd season. He produced respectible numbers with 10 deflections and 3 interceptions. 8 out of 10.

Atlanta 2014 2nd (Dallas) and our 3rd next year for
    Washington MLB Dean Willis

An interesting deal. Willis was a budding star in Houston, and signed with Washington in 2011. He then just sat on the bench. After being a 5th round pick by Dallas in 2007, he has shown he has the skills to play, but for some reason he never got the chance in Atlanta. Getting a 2nd and 3rd for a player going into his 7th year, it was a good deal for both teams, unless he goes on to be a pro-bowl player, which he has shown flashed of. 7 out of 10.

    Tennessee sends QB Tom Brady
    Washington sends pick 4.5

While picking up a legend in Tom Brady for a 4th round pick can hardly be called a bad deal. One has to question the motivation of it. The incumbant starter Aaron Rogers has shown that he's just really not upto being the starting QB for a professional team. He has no leadership to speak of, and while he shows some of the skills needed, he just can't seem to put it together. That and Rogers was just resigned to a 5 year, 21million dollar contract. Then you has last years 2nd round pick Bryce Ogbogu. Brady isn't a mentor. So what was the thought process of bringing him in? Name recognition? 2 out of 10.

One thing we really liked was the way the Washingting GM was able to trade down and pick up extra picks. A rebuilding team needs youth, depth and skilled players.

    2013:

This is a franchise that will be good....in 3-4 years. They have solid, but young talent. They still have some serious holes that need to be addressed. RB Michael Norton needs to get more touchs, running behind the re-vamped offensive line, he should be a force to rekon with this season. Even bringing in Brady though, this offense if going to struggle. He has mediocre (at best) receivers to throw the ball to, and even though Washington has one of the best young lines in the league, teams aren't going to respect those WR's and stack up against the run and blitz him. And with K Neil Rackers, though he has the accuracy of a Greg Maddux change, he has the leg strength that is going to make Extra Point attempts against the wind questionable.

On Defense, there are several standout players, like 3rd year stud LDE Tim Crowder, but they are just not good. Several of the players wouldn't be backups on the Veinna Boys Choir flag football team.

Washington is in a rebuilding mode. They do have a nice base of talent, and have been doing it right by starting with the offensive line. We really question the reasoning for beinging Tom Brady in. If this was a team that was a QB away from being a SB contender, we would understand. Bringing in Brady, just for the sake of bringing him in, isn't a good move. Other than that, this team is on the right track. This season is going to be a struggle, and while Brady will win them some games, we are left to wonder if they would have been better off starting Ogbogu

      2016 Preview

Many feel that it is time to push Brady a side and let Aaron Rodger get the nod. The Coaching staff believes that Brady still has what it takes to get the job done. Regardless who is at QB the true strength of this team is the ground game. RB Shaun Casper is as good as advertised. A strong offensive line can’t hurt. Defensively they are going to be pretty good. CB Jonathon Cobb can still get the job done. Rookie S Dan Bressany just might be the difference maker.

        2017 Preview

When Jerry Fontenot took over the head coaching position of the Washington Redskins, he assumed the top job at one of the most storied franchises in the FFL. He endured two rough seasons, after which he admits he fully expected to be run out of town, before being paired with veteran quarterback Tom Brady and launching the Skins on their current four-year playoff streak.

Now he’s the highest-paid coach in the league, winner of the Coach of the Year award and Washington is coming off of a 12-4 record and their first division title since 2008. The one thing missing from this run, though, is the fourth ring which has eluded the Skins since winning three of the first five FFL championships. And there’s a new QB in town to push Brady for the starting job and the chance to earn it.

After the last two seasons ended with a pair of pedestrian Brady performances in back-to-back playoff losses to the Rams, Washington added another former Titans QB, Drew Henson, to give them additional options under center. Between the two of them, they’ve combined to start 381 games and throw for over 85,000 career yards. Brady has led six straight teams to the playoffs, while Henson only has one career playoff start.

A major factor in the success of the passing game will be the re-vamped receiving corps since RB Shaun Casper was the only Redskin to catch more than 50 passes last year. It begins with two new starters in place at wide receiver. Dwayne Bowe, acquired via trade with Jacksonville, is entering his seventh year and is a prime candidate for a change of scenery. After a breakout second year which earned him first-team All-Pro status, he hasn’t reached 1,000 yards receiving since. Bowe will be paired with another former Jacksonville receiver in Larry Benton. A precise route runner, he should be a solid number two receiver who’s never really received a shot to crack into a starting lineup.

The rest of the offensive pieces are in their prime and their strength should again be the running game. RB Shaun Casper has averaged over 1,300 yards per season since being drafted and had a career-best 1,423 yards last year (his first with Washington). Back-up Ryan Torain could start for a lot of teams. The offensive line is solid at all five spots, despite the retirement of tackle Reggie Wells, with the stand-out being All-Pro guard Andy Aileman. Tight end John Carlson is also an excellent run blocker. With this group of backs and blockers, the Skins gained 20 more yards per game than an average team last year and have the personnel to be even better this season.

Defensively, the front seven play very well together and exceed the sum of their parts. Calais Campbell set a new team record with 13 sacks and Tim Crowder added another seven while middle linebacker Abdul Hodge logged 131 solo tackles. Strong-side linebacker Gene Slatken is the only new starter in the group. He’s worked his way into the starting lineup after being a fourth-round pick last year.

The secondary is stocked with young talent at the safety spot. Spending three picks in the 2015 draft has left the Skins with two good starters (FS Dan Bressany and SS Riddick Gerhart) and plenty of depth. At the cornerback spot, opposing quarterbacks will try and throw away from Derrick Martin again this year and the hope is that 11-year veteran Jonathan Cobb (7 picks in the last two seasons) can continue to make them pay for doing so.

Repeating 12-4 will undoubtedly be difficult. The East is looking stronger and teams like St. Louis, Los Angeles and Chicago await on the schedule. Still, the Redskins look to be prime contenders in the NFC again this year.

        Misc. facts about the Redskins:

        - They have the second-best regular and postseason record since the FFL’s inception
        - If they beat the Kansas City Chiefs this year, there will only be one team in the FFL whom the Skins haven’t beaten (Buffalo)
        - They have never had an FFL MVP, but three different Washington head coaches have been named coach of the year.

          2024 Season Preview
          (As written by zbuckley)

It's been 5 seasons since Washington made a trip to the post season and it's likely they'll extend that # to 6 with rookie QB Ricardo Fitchie running the show. Washington has been very consistent over that period with all 5 season falling within 1 game over or under 500. I expect this will be a rough year for the Redskins but the front office has proven they can win games and they're obviously entering a rebuilding stage.

          Draft and FA

          1 - 16 (16) WAS Herb Sutter T Cincinnati
          2 - 9 (41) WAS Phil Sawyer ILB Nevada - Las Vegas
          2 - 15 (47) WAS Ricardo Fitchie QB Minnesota
          3 - 4 (68) WAS Hunter Winzenried T North Carolina
          3 - 14 (78) WAS Kendrick McGregor P Arizona
          4 - 18 (114) WAS A.J. Watkins T Brigham Young
4 - 20 (116) WAS Harry Krupp TE North Carolina State
          5 - 19 (147) WAS Ralph Schneider DE Montana
          5 - 30 (158) WAS Brady Lynch CB Virginia
          7 - 1 (193) WAS Charlie Linstrom CB Alabama - Birmingham
          7 - 17 (209) WAS Adam Capriglione DT Duke

The Washington front office has to be a little disappointed by the rookies results this training camp. Without question the biggest positive would be 2nd round QB Ricardo Fitchie who looks like a potential franchise QB in this league. 7th round CB Charlie Linstrom could turn into a potential starter or at worst a nickle DB and a special teams ace.

Washington was very quiet in free agency making only two signings. QB Levon Procop will likely enter the season as the #2 QB behind rookie Fitchie.

          Offense

Expectations have to be lowered for this team with a rookie QB and no proven playmaker in the running game to take the pressure off the passing game. The offensive line has two rookies starting at both tackle positions and overall a lot of youth across the line. WR Kim Doyle lead the team in receiving yards last will partner with former 1st rounder WR Jon Freeman to lead the skill position players. Washington does have talent on the offensive side of the ball unfortunately it's at the C position. 6th yr vet Larry Figley is the rosters most skilled player but his impact probably will go unnoticed this season.

          Defense

This is the stronger of the two units for the Redskins and they can expected to be on the field for much of the season they should be able to keep a fair amount of games close. Former 1st rounder DE Jason Pierre-Paul needs to improve on his first 2 seasons in the league producing only 5 sacks in each season. Winfred McConnell should find his way onto the field this year and would be without question their best coverage LB.

          Overall Outlook

I'd expect a 5-6 win season for the Redskins this year. The inexperience and the talent of the division with work against them this year. Hopefully management has the same expectation and will weather the growing pains with this young team.
