    2013 Preview

Jacksonville (last year 8-8, 3rd in AFC South)

    Key Additions:
FS Lorenzo Logan – Coming off an off year of only 1 INT and 7 pass defenses. Good against the run and in pass coverage.

LCB Juan Ignasiak (1st Round draft pick) – good against the run and in coverage. Also a solid Special Teams player.

Key Losses: LCB Will Allen and RB Deuce McAllister – really lost last year as their time on the field was greatly diminished. However, the loss of these two players will be tough to replace.

Offense: 5th in the league last year in passing, Jacksonville will once again probably look to pass first and run second. The success of this team will probably rest upon their pair of QB’s Jake Delhomme (38 yrs old) and David Garrard (35). Both played well last year while splitting play at QB. The biggest names on this offense are (and will be for years) 4th year FL Everett Wiggins and 3rd year SE Dwayne Bowe (2nd Team All-Pro) who combined for almost 2,600 yards receiving in 2012. The offensive line is solid – particularly C Nick Hardwick, LG Fred Matua and RT Tony Mueller.

Defense: Jacksonville had a very good rush defense last year (8th best at 105 yards/game) and looks to replicate that in 2013 with basically the same starting seven in the box this year. The D-Line is outstanding and should remain that way for years to come – most of the line are in their 4th or 5th season (LDE Stan Sawyer is the oldest at 31). The LB core is the weakest part of the defense with WLB (Kendall Perryman and Irving Nevett) being particularly weak. The passing D was weak for Jax in 2012 (8th worst at 236.3 yards/game). Jacksonville addressed this concern with the off-season acquisition of Logan and Ignasiak. The defense is anchored by aging vet Deon Grant at SS. Grant (34 years old) is 3rd all-time in interceptions and looks to move up the list this year.

Overall: Jacksonville should improve modestly over their 8-8 record from last year. With Indianapolis in the division, it is difficult to see them winning the division but they should be in the wild card hunt. Much will depend upon their QB play and whether the additions of Logan and Ignasiak improve their pass defense.

    Prediction:
9-7, 2nd in the AFC South. Possible Wild card berth.

      2016 Preview

This is one of the more intriguing teams this season. There are some rumors flying that there may be a bit of a QB controversy in Jacksonville this year. While last year's rookie QB Josh Johnson started the majority of the games last year, verteran QB Lorenzo McKnight was noticably irked by this decision. It appears as though the coaching staff wasn't too thrilled with Johnson's play last year and McKnight looks to get another shot the starting job. However with Johnson only going to get better, it is only a matter of time until he takes over for good. McKnight will most likely be sent packing when that time comes, which could be as early as next season. McKnight's long-term contract that he signed last season complicates things however.

Regardless of who the quarterback is for the Jaguars, the rest of the offense is solid. The left tackle position leaves something to be desired, but T Winston Justice, aquired this offseason from Dallas, provides some good depth there. The Jaguars had arguably one of the best drafts this year, with all three of their 1st rounders being immediate starters on defense. Don't be too surprised if Jacksonville manages to sneak into the playoffs as a wild card this year. Expect even bigger things in the next few years once this superb draft class matures.

2017 Preview (As written by cyril)

[The Denver Post, covering for Florida Times-Union]

Jacksonville, already one of the youngest teams in the entire league (second only to Indianapolis, their divisional rivals,) continued their rebuilding process by drafting 15 players, more than any team this year except Indianapolis. They infused such a large quantity of young blood that Red Cross will soon knocking on their door asking for donors.

While this year’s draftees may be devoid of defensive standouts like Kenyon Zachery, Lawrence Fisk and Brenden Anderson from last year, the comprehensive and evenly good quality of players will provide the backbone for this team for many years to come. The organization took a patient approach to address all facets of the roster. Almost every position in the roster is plugged with solid players on the wings, ready to take over should a T.O. type situation arises.

With a very even talent across all positions, not many of these new players will see themselves on the line of scrimmige immediately. Nonetheless, several players could emerge as starters. The names of Vinny Bellisari and Josh Copeland may sound more like classical music composers than offensive tackles, but these two top picks may be forced to jump into the fire pit on Day 1 and anchor a very porous O-Line. It will be a long learning year for both of them, and it will be an even longer year for the starting QB, as he will get whopped big time again this year. Hope is high, though, that both of these players will grow and emerge like phoenixes from the ash….and hopefully not the ash of their poor QB, if there is anything left.

Dixon Naughton may not start right away as wideout, but he will be returning punts immediately and could be the next Devin Hester. Norm Kraut and Gerald Shapiro will battle with each other for the tight end spot. Defensive tackle Cory Hopkins will also see a decent amount of starting actions this year. Outside linebacker Roosevelt Meinhart may well take over as starter by mid-season, after potential talks to acquire Ben Capstick from Denver broke down over “personality” issues.

With so many rookies with very decent qualities, no veteran is safe from being dislodged from his position on the depth chart. I would not be surprised if the starting roster by the later part of season is entirely different from that of Week 1.

Speaking of Week 1, Jacksonville will again kick off this year with a tough matchup hosting their divisional rivals Houston. The last time they beat the Texans was in Week 1 of 2014. One sweet revenge exactly three years later could provide the Jaguars with the fuel they need to start turning around the franchise. The next two weeks will see them travel to St. Louis, the Superbowl runner-up, and Buffalo, who are much better than their 9-7 record shows. Any honest Jacksonville fan will have to admit the best chance to land a first victory lies in Week 4, when they host the hapless Cincinnati, who recently fired all their cheerleaders as scapegoats for their 1-15 record.

The rest of the year will not be easy for Jacksonville, as they will face Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Houston (again) and Tennessee (twice) and chances are not good. On the other hand, there will be great opportunities against Baltimore and Indianapolis, two bottom feeders from last year. Jacksonville HAVE to win these games to avoid getting backlashes from their fans. However, I predict the key weeks that will define this year’s Jacksonville will be Week 12 & 13, when they host Arizona and San Diego. If they win these two games, there is a good chance they would finish above .500 for the first time since 2013.

Their schedule aside, one of their biggest concerns has to be the running back position. Finished second to last in rushing yardage last year, they have a group of serviceable halfbacks but no clear standout to lead their path through the thick of opposing D-Line. The trade for Lawrence Blake from Cleveland and their 3rd round pick Andy Otto will improve the depth, but don’t expect instant cure.

On the other hand, their passing offense, ranked 2nd, surprised many with their relatively pedestrian group of receivers and a rotating corp of quarterbacks. While Lorenzo McKnight is the current signal caller and has started 13 games last season, all three other backups saw actions and each of them is salivating over the possibility of knocking the 8-year veteran off his throne. It is amazing to see them pull off these great passing numbers with all these in-fighting among the ball throwers. Many have credited their passing success to Jared Davis, the charismatic receiver leader, for being the glue that holds the receiving corp in one piece mentally and allow everyone to overachieve. We will see whether they can produce the same magic as we all witnessed last year.

While star sophomores Fisk and Anderson will anchor the backers and secondary, the strongest position of this team is without a doubt their defensive ends. Sedrick Ellis has already established himself as one of the most feared QB harassers in the game. His partner Kenyon Zachery should emerge from a relative non-descript first year to start wreaking havoc at the opposing QBs. It will be very difficult for any team to handle these two monstrous fireballs at the same time. We shall see a definite improvement in the number of sacks this year while the team addresses their poor rushing D somehow.

With a rookie head coach in Ty Blaker, a former offensive genius from the college ranks, on board, no doubt Jacksonville is still a project under construction, but there is ample evidence that the concrete in their foundation is hardening and their future could only get better. Few, however, expects them to make the playoffs this year, the general consensus among senior citizens is that they finish with a projected record of 6-10. One should note that 75% of the entire team has 5 or fewer years of experience, the Jaguars could be the last team laughing a few years down the road when everybody else in the league checks in at the senior housing center down the street. Bingo anyone?

          2024 Season Preview
          (as written by MARV)

The Jags could be a team that goes either way but Im going to predict no better then 8-8 I think they fall into the top 10 picks somewhere

          The 2024 Jags rookie class
          1.1 QB-Corwin Doyle 29/63 Arizona State.
          2.2 ILB-Levon Newnam 23/53 Washington State
          2.5 DE-Zach Erickson 27/60 S. Connecticut State
          3.12 TE-Lee Norris 57/65 Mississippi
          4.2 RB-Dana Brock 33/43 California
          4.3 FB-Deron Golding 48/56 Oregon State
          4.12 T-Cedric Vickery 15/54 Jacksonville State
          4.15 K-Thurman Bullock 43/66 Virgina
          4.28 WR-Tyrus Murack 12/37 Tennessee unsigned
          5.3 ILB-Andy Irvine 32/54 Colgate
          5.28 P-Danny Daum 39/52 Western Kentucky
          6.18 S-Michael Smith 22/52 Indiana
          UDFA P-Joel Farley 33/52 Alabama

The Jags have 22 new players in 2024 13 being the rookies above.
The other nine came via trade or UFA signings
8th year C-Deion Collier 68/68 trade with Seattle
7th year QB-Mark Sanchez 51/51 trade with Indianapolis
5th Year CB-Leonard Moriarty 56/56 trade with Seattle
4th Year C-Lawrence Berry 43/50 trade with Houston

          12th year WR-Howie Hutton 38/38
          10th year WR-Courtney Kazadi 34/34
          6th year OLB-Louie Shaw 43/43
          5th year OLB-Juan Zukowsky 41/41
5th year S-Roosevelt Webster 40/40 sorry ass SOB lol

Now that we have had a look at the Jags offseason activities. You can say they had a biiizzzy offseason.
The Jags drafted QB-Corwin Doyle 1st overall. Now they traded for Mark Sanchez not mention Terrel which they turned around and traded him to Indy. Wow the whole trade thing with the Jags in making my head spin. Scratch all the how they became Jags stuff. wow.you are a bizzy guy Mike.

I think the Jags could have done better for themselves by taking maybe OL/DL even a DB
          1.9 T-Gene Forbes 40/79
          1.20 G-Alonzo Hansen 40/79
          1.3 DE-Donnie Johnson 49/77
1.4 CB- Darryl Dole 53-79 IMO the best player in the draft next would be 1.5 WR-Dominic Radlick 57/61.
The Jags drafted well IMO they got alot of needed positions fill if not by the draft but by trade or FA they arent loaded by any means but they do have alot of upside players and if Doyle runs the offense this year its going to be a rough road breaking the rookie in and the Jags will find themselves probably with a top 10 pick Maybe their franchise RB will be there for them next season or WR to help out the already crowned 'Gunslinger' Corwin. Doyle
The Jags are masters of the trade table, generals of the war room. And you can bet those rookies time in Richmond is limited because the Jags are probably seeing future 1st rd picks for most of them.

            2027 8-8
            2026 8-8
            2025 4-12
            2024 8-8

            2029 Draft

            2 - 21 (53) T Pete McWilliams Ratings: 31/59 7/-5
            2 - 27 (59) G Marlon West Ratings: 28/62 4/-7
            3 - 1 (65) WR Hugh Lincoln Ratings: 28/49 2/-5
            3 - 5 (69) S Bryant Foster Ratings: 29/48 3/-4
            3 - 26 (90) C Allen Reeves TRADED*** Ratings: 30/63 6/-5

            4 - 27 (123) CB Johnny Maxwell Ratings: 26/43 4/-3
            6 - 27 (187) WR Julio Menard Ratings: 23/34 2/-3

Not a great camp for the Jags. Out of the whole draft, looks like McWilliams and West will be
serviceable but not sure the long term potential of the rest.

            2028 Roster

            QB - Jake Locker:
Uber-stud. If the OL can keep him on his feet, he could be one of the best in the business.

RB - Perry Torres and J.T. Garrison:
2028 was a lost year for the young Torres. He's gonna have to stay healthy to take the pressure off
            of Locker

            TE - Lee Norris:
Not alot of offensive firepower. More of a blocker

WR - Jermain Morris and a cast of thousands
This will go as far a Morris carries them although Pat Flowers and Kent Vance just flat get it done.
            Locker could do alot worse

            Offensive Line:
Not a bad crew. They are strong off the ball in the running game and despite the statuesque Locker
back there they do a decent job in pass protection.

            Defensive Line:
The time has come for LDE Marcell Dareus to transition from potential to production. He has all the
tools and a good cast around him. Not sure if a 3-4 is the way to go with this strong of a defensive
            line.

            Linebackers:
Yes, Dusty Hawkins has a BIG pass rush bar, but these guys (Manes, Hawkins and Lee) would make a
GREAT back 3 in a 4-3. Their coverage skills and the PRT to blitz would make it formidable against
both the pass and the run.

            Defensive Backs:
This group is strong at Safety and a bit weak at Corner. If there is an Achilles heel on the team
            it will be at CB.

            Summary:
The tools are here to get back to the playoffs. How far they go will be the game planning development
to maximize Lockers talent while keeping him upright as well as figuring out all the moving parts on
defense. This defense could be scary good but they really could use another corner.

                2040 Season Preview

While it might be short lived, we're the damn AFC Champs and we went into a crib and took our title so I'm excited to see what we can do in our return to ball season. For starters, the defensive system in place has been scrapped-- We're playing Cover-2/3, doubling studs, and mixing the looks up just enough to keep your passer guessing whose coming. We're going to get after it.

                Off season Goals:

                Rebuild secondary
                Acquire HB2
Add some defensive scheme fits (LBs/DT)
                sign TE3
                sign WR3

                Rebuild Secondary

I know I inherited an excellent tandem of corners here but I had some crappy safeties behind them. +with the way things are now with respect to salary, keeping both Shamate and Wagner as cornerbacks wouldn't be smart.
LCB Shamute has been moved to Safety (Red) while Wagner will play out his contract as our Two (RCB) corner. Depth-diamond Darrin Robertson is a pure press corner (81) and will now man the Cover(LCB) position. Rookie safety Eric Lane will play the FS (Sky). Depth was added via FA in nickels/dime Adam Hawkins (secondary leader) & J.R. Guthrie.
I like the application of talent better with this alignment and these guys will likely be our starters over the next 2-3 seasons.

                HB2

Julio Carlson is a fine RB and our current #2, Collin Garrett is serviceable--needed a guy dynamic enough to shoulder the load in the event Carlson goes down.
I waited for Rice running back Rex Rayburn to fall to me in the 4th. He's got more tools than Garrett and should be able to step right in as the complementing rusher.

                TE3

*FB Will Jeffries was added after taking Rayburn as I think he'll be a much better option as our lead blocker. He fills our need at H-back as he's big enough to play TE in spots.

                QB2/QB3

Not a need at all, but if you wait to shop for QBs when you're desperate and you miss, the butt-hurt is much more intense.

Looking for my insurance policy at QB, I took two swings in this draft, QBs Harold Foster and Emmitt Warren will be brought along slowly -- first one to learn the 5WR and slot forms stays, the other gets to return me some value in a trade.

I didn't address everything I wanted in the draft but I got some solid players in positions that are key to my scheme..not bad for not having a 1st or 2nd round pick (same deal next season too!)

We need to establish ourselves early as we have a lot of statement games on schedule this season.

                Good luck guys!

                  Training Camp

                  Hits:

Rex Rayburn, RB -- perfect pick / fit considering the hit our veteran took
Will Jeffries, FB -- nice FB to block for rayburn, 4th TE
Harold Foster QB - Scrambler had all the tools we like in our PowerSpread attack and we lucked out and hit

                  Misses:

FS Eric Lane *keeping as his bars still settle in the areas that work for the defense -- I expect this when I go for a system fit vs BPA
QB Emmitt Warren, one of them had to be fool's gold

QB Fouts was effective -- not pretty, but I think he can win some games when we call on him. He lead us to 400+ yards of offense and used those legs to keep drives moving. I'm gonna need some more reps to see who he really is but he looks like our QB2 right now

RB Rayburn -- 26 carries 138, we got our guy.

                    New Defense

Jags bringing sexy back...4 sacks, 2 turnovers, and lot's big stops today. FS Lane not booming was disappointing but he went out and did exactly what he was drafted to do this week. His hits caused a pass breakup and a huge forced fumble right after STL burned us for a big gain. Screw that ovr rating

Jaguars Looking Fierce After Early Season Tumbles

The AFC champs stand at 8-3 with a huge game against the storied Pittsburgh Steelers on deck. The new-look Jags are feed off the Lee Von Wyss-led 'Mad Cat' defense and a resurgent passing game built on the arm of QB Junior Woodard (2651 yds passing,15TDs,93.6 QBR) and his big-play targets, TE Jessie Kaeding (38 catches, 502 yards) and WR Dale Gibson, (56,893,7TDS).

While the Jags have looked good, the division is in bad shape with talented Houston imploding and both Indianapolis/Tennessee struggling to make plays on the defensive sides of the ball. Barring an injury to Woodard, Jacksonville should be able to keep it's division lead and position itself well for a post-season berth.

                      Surprises:

                      That Defense Tho'

I underestimated how good this unit could be and it's largely because Von Wyss is such an X-factor. He turns a simple play call into a highlight at a pretty good rate. The defense's play in the NE, Denver, and Minnesota games were Solevision watch worthy IMHO.

I will need to add a corner if my press guy won't resign, but the rest of the cogs are all signed through the next 2 seasons. CB Shumate's conversion to FS worked and should be a beast for the pass defense next year. For this season, we're making do with FS Burt Ingram--more playmaker than technician.

                      The Struggling Running Game

Too much talent at this position to have it struggle as it did. Looks to have been related to me trying to run draws and the goal-line power a bit too much (derp). The scheme has been adjusted and the past couple of weeks have seen some marked improvement.

                      WR Dale Gibson
He's playing very well for us right now, I signed him to a long-term deal after watching him continue to make plays for us early in the year and he's still hot.

                      WR Henry "Ace" Neimeyer

When you have a good defense, you get a dangerous punt returner. Ace dropped 219 yards of returns on Tenn! He's won us 3 games just by getting us in position with a huge return OR a big receiving play. He's been the best ROI with respect to my FA adds this season.

                      Offensive MVP:
                      QB Junior Woodard

                      Defensive MVP:
                      WLB Lee Von Wyss
