    2013 Preview

The Cleveland Browns front office ordered an extra gross of sticky nametags and are providing frequent guided tours of their practice facilities in order to accomodate all of the new faces on this year's roster. When the "New" Browns break camp this year, over a third of the players will be different from last season's 7-9 team that missed the playoffs for the fourth consecutive year.

The Browns started the off season by signing Offensive Coordinator Kim Torres and handing out big extensions to key players suc as TE Everett, DE Brian Agar and DT Ricky Baumert.

Free agency brought in the likes of ILB Tim Dobbins, S Brent Gerhart, S Rashad Washington and back up QB, Walter Andrew. A big trade with the Vikings was needed to land QB Dante Culpepper and WR Lee Evans. The Browns used three 2nd round picks to add LB Julio Holstein, CB Allen Page and S Dusty Cook.

The Cleveland Offense should look new despite virtually the same O Line and RB Lawrence "Show me the Money" Moroney. With Moroney's 3.82 YPC, 1 TD performance last season, management may start asking him to "show me the production." The passing game should be renewed with new QB Dante Culpepper and WR Lee Evans joining talented R Levon Givens and TE Shaun Clancy.

The Cleveland Defense also underwent huge upheaval with at least 11 new players. The D line looks steady for a while with some contract extentions and the addition of a new DE Jason Hatcher.

The Linebackers and Dbacks, are virtually all new. WLB Antonio Gupta was aquired via trade and FA LB Tim Dobbins signed on to go along with 2 drafted LB's.

An entire new stable of DB's was added as 6 new defensive backs arrived in the off season to joint talented CB Leon Hall. CB Page and S Cook were drafted in the 2nd round and should see some playing time along with free agents FS Rashad Washington and SS Brent Gerhardt.

Who knows what the season will hold for the New Look Browns? They certainly have some players who can get it done on offense as long as the O-line can hold it together. On defense, the Browns have a great D Line anchored by Wes McGee and some LB's that can have an impact with Gupta on board. The D-Backs look to be the shakiest unit as it remains to be seen how all the new faces fit in with CB Hall.

This reviewer predicts the new O takes the team to the playoffs and ends the drought.

      2016 Preview

The Cleveland offense rides mostly on the shoulders of RB Jonathan Stewart, who in his 2nd year is already one of the premier all-purpose backs in the league. He already has the most 100 yard rushing games in Browns history and is 3rd in yards from scrimmage. The key will be the play of the offensive line. If they can give QB Andrew Walter decent protection and open up even modest holes for Stewart, the Browns should be able to repeat last years successes. In the secondary, Cleveland has one of the best CB tandems in the league, and they will be shutting down opposing passing attacks for years to come.

        Re: Cleveland Browns

        2029 Season Preview:

        Offseason Overview:

        Retirements:
        None

        Draft:
        1.31: Don Alston, RT
        2.31: Julio Craig, QB
        3.31: Ray Deericks, CB
        4.31 Stan Pritchett, LDT
        5.31: Rod Farrell, FS
        6.23: Kyle Stanton, WR
        6.31: Zack Emarlos, MLB
        7.10: Brady, Flynn, TE
        7.16: Duane Holliday, WLB
        7.31 William Washington, K

        Key free agent signings:
Martin Atteberry, C; Damon Bailey, WR; Albert Meadows, WR

        Offseason Summary:
The Browns were pretty quiet on the free agent market this offseason. Damon Bailey will probably start at one of the WR spots, but he’s really better suited for a backup role. A decent 3rd WR playing the 2nd spot. Meadows, WR, will compete for a backup spot on the roster. A solid #3 or #4 guy. Atteberry is a good, solid C that will probably backup Mills. Even though Atteberry is currently the better player, Mills’ upside is too great to have him sit behind an average center. While the Browns were quiet on the free agent market, they brought in 10 draftees. Alston should start right off the bat at RT. Alston was moved to LT in camp, but he’s still the best option for RT despite the offensive line coaches reassessing his talent level (a -9 drop in potential). Craig could be Null’s eventual replacement if he develops. Though his reports from training camp are that he’s not as good as expected (a -9 drop in potential). 3rd round pick Ray Deericks will be either the nickel or dime CB and could possibly develop into a quality 2nd CB. Though early signs indicate a nickel back spot at best (another huge drop in TC, -10 in potential). 4th rounder Stan Pritchett, LDT adds depth at the DT position. He should be the main backup DT this season since he has more upside than Jack Kirk. The team needs a FS badly and thus took Rod Farrell in the 5th round. Early indicators are that the the Browns will still be seeking a FS next season (-7 drop in potential). The rest of the draft picks should be in backup positions and probably won’t make much of an impression. In fact, this is a very disappointing draft class. Every player had a significant drop in their potential. The minimum drop for any draftee was 6 and as large as 10. The overall loss in potential for this draft class was 75 points. Ouch.

        Projected Starting Line-up:

        Offense:
        QB: Keith Null
        RB: Marty Anderson
        FB: Jimmy Sherman
        TE: Otis Shields
        WR: Terrance Tate
        WR: Damon Bailey
        LT: Darren Narcisse
        LG: Xavier Gunn
        C: Clifton Mills
        RG: Julio Elliot
        RT: Don Alston

        Offensive Summary:
Keith Null had an excellent season last year in his 12 games. Throwing 23 TDs vs. only 6 INTs. He’s been a very good QB for 4 years running and should give the Browns another effective season. Henry Nowlin was very good in his 7 games (4 starts). Throwing 6 TDs vs. 1 INT. If they employ the same scheme, the Browns passing game is in good hands. Superstar to be Marty Anderson will carry the load at RB. While he had a disappointing season last year, he’s got the talent to be a top RB in this league. The offensive line needs to make some holes for this guy to be effective. FB Jimmy Sherman will certainly do his part to protect the QB and open holes in the running game. A type of FB every team would wish for. Not much of a runner, but he can block and catch the ball when needed. Otis Shields leads a pretty weak group of TEs. You won’t get many big plays from Shields, but he’s a solid blocker and can get open. Widdell is an excellent long snapper, but doesn’t add a lot of punch to the position and sadly neither do the other 2 TEs on the roster. The WR position is led by 3 time Pro Bowl starter Terrance Tate. He’s only 12 TDs away from 100. An excellent #1 WR and a great option for Null. However, the 2nd spot is going to be held by a guy that would make a decent #3 or #4 WR. I’m guessing Bailey because he does enough of everything to be effective. I just can’t see Burton or Meadows being more useful than Bailey. The offensive line looks pretty good. LT Narcisse still has some room to grow, but should get better as the season progresses. Gunn is a top notch LG and Julio Elliot is an above average RG. Add in Mills and you’ve got a nice middle of the line with an LT that should get better than average eventually. The weak spot is RT, but Alston’s a rookie and may end up being pretty good unless his horrible training camp is a sign of things to come.

        Defense:
        LDE: Aldon Smith
        LDT: Rondell Dillingham
        RDT: Ndamukong Suh
        RDE: Bryan Henderson
        SLB: Shaun Kroinek
        MLB: Burt Barkley
        WLB: Emmitt Poston
        LCB: Chuck Hoyler
        RCB: Marcus Gilchrist
        SS: Darrell Stuckey
        FS: Jumbo Houston

        Defensive Summary:
The defense has some very good players and should be an above average unit. The defensive line is led by Aldon Smith. You can’t get much better than that in this game. Add in Suh and you’ve got 2 very good players surrounded by guys that could start on other teams. Dillingham at DT and Henderson at RDE will benefit from the double teams on Smith and Suh. The backups at DT are weak, but young. 2nd year player Rickey Ruschak could start at DE for a number of teams in the league. At linebacker, you’ve got some issues. Shaun Kroinek is a fine SLB. MLB Barkley and WLB Poston have some developing to do, but could be good in the long run. The 2 starters at CB, Hoyler and Gilchrist, are a strength. The backups don’t give you much, but the top 2 can cover just about any starting WR combo. Stuckey, SS is a good starting safety, but the other safety and backups won’t be much help on the field.

        Special Teams:
William Washington was picked to be a possible replacement for Mike Mahoney. I can’t see that happening after Washington’s disastrous training camp (-8). My guess is Mahoney holds on to the job. He’s nothing special, but has great accuracy. He has no leg strength and that could be a problem at the end of games. I wouldn’t be surprised to see 2 placekickers carried here. One to kickoff and Mahoney for FGs. It’s tough to lose a spot for a specialist like that though. Dimcheff is a good punter and should help the team in the battle for field position. He has good hang time and power. They’ll have Meadows and Propson return kicks. Unless the Browns want to risk injuring their best offensive weapon, WR Tate, they’ll need to find another punt returner. It’s a big drop from Tate to Haden, but it’s worse to lose your only good WR returning punts.

        Prediction:

I think the Browns will compete for a playoff spot. They’ve got some nice pieces, particularly on defense. An efficient QB, a top flight WR, and a very good RB should be able to put some points on the board. The offensive line should improve as the season progresses (at the tackle positions). However, the defense will keep the scores down so the offense doesn’t have to do too much. That will allow the offense to stay balanced and unpredictable. I think this team will get better as the season progresses. They might get off to a slow start, but I don’t think they will. I’d be surprised if the team won less than 9 games. So let’s say a drop from 13-3 to 10-6 due to the bad draft and the quiet FA season.
