    Dallas Cowboys 2044 Off-Season

After a season of cap clearing and finishing 6 – 10 the Cowboys had two choices. Start the rebuilding process or build on what they have. As soon as the off-season started it was pretty clear what they have decided to do. With many picks and tons of cap space it was Hi Ho Hi Ho and off to work they go.

They made some big trades bringing some serious but young talent. On offense From New England they were able to land a starting RB in Carlos Hyde (25) 55/55 and starting WR in Abel Hutton (29) 45/45. It seems they might have found an answer at QB nabbing QB Gary Tanner (26) 54/54 from the Jets. They also got some offensive line help from Philly with OG Kevin Woodson (27) 44/44. All four players will be penciled in as starters on day one.

There were many holes on Defense. But they quickly filled one with help from Atlanta. They landed a super stud in DE Chris Dishman (25) 75/75. Teaming with Dishman is longtime vet DT Darren Reid 63/63 (34) from Philly. He might have some wear on the tires but he still has gas in the tank. Both of these guys will be key on the pass rush and are going to wreak havoc on offensive lines this season. CB Thomas Gordon (26) 52/52 was another important piece. The desperately needed a CB and Gordon is a very good one. All three players are going to really improve this defense.

In Free agency this year seemed to be very competitive. They missed on a few players like WR Sammy Watkins and FS Zack Grande. They were able to get a couple of nice looking players that will be expected to make a difference. OT Erik Heath (25) 40/40 is one of the better run blockers out there. After trading for Carlos Hyde getting Heath was a no brainer. On defense they brought in CB Kenneth Cottrell 42/42 will be 31 after the season starts, but he brings a lot to the table. Not only will he start at RCB, but he will be the teams punt returner and possible a gunner on special teams.

With six picks in the first 85 of 2044 draft, Dallas was going to take every opportunity to select the best possible player of their team. Two holes that were not filled through FA or the draft was at SLB and MLB. So of course with the 1st two selections Dallas took care of that. At 1.20 the selection was OLB Donte Fowler 55/64. He will play SLB on 1st and 2nd down while rushing the passer on 3rd and long. Next they used 2.3 on MLB Benardrick McKinney 39/50. The defense will ask a lot from the rookie LB’s. Picks 2.8 and 2.15 were solely to help Tanner in the passing game. Pick 2.8 was the selection of WR Phillip Dorsett 31/40. He will be asked to compete for the starting spot. He could also be used in the return game. 2.15 was used to select TE Zackary Gray 26/43. He was great in college, but was not as impressive in Training camp. He is still better then what they have at TE. So he will get many opportunities. 3.12 was used on DT Sean Heath 34/46. The goal is for Heath to learn from Reid and ultimately be his replacement in a few years.

It is safe to say this off-season was a success. They traded to acquire seven starters. The got another two in Free agency. It seems they drafted at three possibly four guys that will be starting. Don't rule out any big trades after the season starts. Now the question is how long will it take for the Cowboys to be a winner again. It has been three years since they made the playoffs (2041). As long as they stay healthy they should be in the hunt in December.
