  • Giants 2044 Draft Class

    Using the Jags format...

Giants finished 2043 with a record of 7-9. This earned them the distinction of not drafting in the top 10. The change in philosophy from trading 1st round picks to growing talent has increased the team composition to 31 players acquired thru the draft. Last year the Giants hit payday with the acquisition of 1st team WR Frank Garrett. Lets see what this years class yields:

    [1-14]Kevin White - WR
    School: North Carolina
Height: 6' 4" (Way Above Average)
    Weight:220 lbs (Way Above Average)

    Home Town Analysis
White a a big receiver selected after a QB failed to fall to pick 14 in the year of the QB. TJ Jordan's hall of fame career is on the decline so aligning him with a good receiving core should make-up for TJ short comings. His potential on KR / PR will increase his touches on the field.

    Role:
    KR / PR / FL

    [2-13]Donovan Smith - T
    School: Brigham Young
Height: 6' 4" (Way Below Average)
Weight: 304 lbs (Way Below Average)

    Home Town Analysis
Giants have been in the bottom 4th in the league in rushing which has added pressure to TJ Jordan to make plays. Donovan Smith hopefully in the answer to the revolving door of undersized lineman who have been manning the line over the last 3 years. Smith along with last years
    Role: LT - 2

    [3-16] Melvin Gordon - RB

    School: Texas
    Height: 5' 9" (Below Average)
    Weight: 213 lbs (Below Average)

    Home Town Analysis
Looking to continue the upgrade of the running game the Giants reached out for Melvin Gordon. Melvin was projected as a 2nd rounder but looks to have slipped due to his lack of top end speed and slight build. Giants expect him to compete for carries as a backup RB.

    Role:
    RB - 2 / KR - 2

    [4-15] Byron Farnell - S

    School: Georgia Tech
    Height: 5' 11" (Below Average)
    Weight: 201 lbs (Below Average)

    Home Town Analysis
Giants secondary could be called Average at best.. Farnell looks good on tape in interceptions as well as showing a willingness to defend against the run making him and ideal safety. SS Arnold Browning is in his last year of his contract so the pick of Byron Farnell as a possible replacement is a no brainer. He will compete with FA Zack Grande for playing time across from Browning.

    Role:
    SS - 2

    [4-31] Karl Ta'Amu - DT

    School: Florida State
    Height: 6' 3" (Average)
    Weight: 303 lbs (Average)

    Home Town Analysis

A surprise pick in Ta'Amu who showed flashes in college of being an impact lineman. His strengths is his straight line speed which may lead to a move to DE to eventually replace Donnie Polumbo who decided to return for 1 more year.

    Role: DE - 2

    [5-14] James Fulton - RB
    School: Temple
    Height: 5' 10" (Below Average)
Weight: 206 lbs (Way Below Average)

    Home Town Analysis

Another running back that slipped due to his in experience. Temple isn't known for creating good RBs. Giants took a chance on him and expect him to compete as a change of pace back..

    Role: Inside RB

    [6-13] Cory Lane, QB
    School: Mississippi State
    Height: 6' 2" (Average)
    Weight: 225 lbs (Above Average)

    Home Town Analysis

Lane showed flashes in college. With TJ Jordan in possibly his last year an heir needed to be found. Lane watched as other highly ranked QBs went of the board and will get a chance to prove the scouts wrong as the Giants don't have much depth behind Jordan

    Role:
    QB-2

    [7-16] Stephen Banta
    School: Georgia Tech
    Height: 6' 2" (Average)
    Weight: 186 lbs (Below Average)

    Home Town Analysis
Banta is a guy who has shown the ability to be in the right place at the right time. A player who gets by with his smarts more then his ability. Possibly a coach in the making but at best he will be on special teams and carrying bags.

    Role:
    CB-3

In summary, this draft was about depth for the future as we don't expect for anybody outside of Kevin White WR to see significant playing time.

Byron Farnell is someone I was really high on. The kid looks raw at this point but he has the makings of a vey solid SS.
